Lansoprazole for Children With Poorly Controlled Asthma: A Randomized Controlled Trial Writing Committee for the American Lung Association

چکیده
RESULTS. Almost 600 patients were randomized to each treatment arm. Almost 75% of patients had a least 1 episode of asthma, with almost half of patients culminating in an exacerbation. No significant difference was seen between groups in the number of episodes leading to asthma exacerbations. Daily montelukast reduced symptoms over the 12-day treatment period of asthma episodes compared with placebo (P 5 .045). b-Agonist use was reduced with both daily (P 5 .048) and intermittent (P 5 .028) montelukast compared with placebo. However, because of prespecified rules for multiplicity adjustments (requiring a positive primary endpoint), statistical significance for secondary endpoints could not be concluded.

CONTEXT Asymptomatic gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is prevalent in children with asthma. Untreated GER has been postulated to be a cause of inadequate asthma control in children despite inhaled corticosteroid treatment, but it is not known whether treatment with proton pump inhibitors improves asthma control. OBJECTIVE To determine whether lansoprazole is effective in reducing asthma symptoms...
متن کاملCosts and Perils of Therapeutic Creep
CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA REPORT SYMPTOMS OF GAStroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) more often than children without asthma. Nevertheless, a systematic review of the child health literature, which included studies using pH probes and other objective assessment methods, concluded that the true nature of the association between GERD and asthma, their temporal relation, and the causal direction, remain...
متن کاملDetermine Efficacy of a Short Course of Montelukast in Children with Intermittent Asthma and Viral Infection
Introduction Mild intermittent asthma is common in children and viral infections are responsible for the majority of exacerbations. As leukotrienes are potent inflammatory mediators, some studies have shown that Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist, may be effective on reduction of asthma symptom. To determine whether a short course of Montelukast in asthmatic children with common col...
